Granny Bea, My Hero

Memorial Day 2011

My grandma gave her life in service of our country.
She was not a soldier, but her eldest son served in the US Navy.
She did not complete basic training, but she raised 5 children, mostly on her own.
She did not see comrades die in war, but she endured the death of her husband & of a son.
She was not on the front lines of battle, but she guarded the home front with love & faith.
She did not shiver in fear in the trenches, but she prayed every day for strength & comfort.
She did not wait anxiously for a care package, but instead created them for other families.
She was not a General, but stood as firm as our beloved flag; a beacon for her loved ones.
No, my grandma was not a brave soldier in our military...but she fought for a better life so that we could make our country proud.
She guarded her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a fierce weapon called Love. Called God. Until God called her home.
My grandma gave her life in service of our country.
In service of others.
In service of us.
In service of God.

---------------------------------------------------------

Praying today for all our military and their families.
Also for all those who have contributed to the making & keeping of this great nation.
With our flaws, with our disagreements
Firm still, in our hopes for the future & our desire for freedom for all.

"BEING THERE"
(Gran's final visit with her youngest sister, Bernice.)
We come into this world loved, adored and cradled with tenderness.
All we can hope for is to leave this world in the same fashion.
